A Working Farm Garden

Garden Design Brief

The landscape before the design The farmyard and front garden of this property merged into one another and the back garden had little or no defining structure.

The brief was to design a front garden that would properly set off the house. The requirements of the new garden were:

  • Parking for visitors away from the farm traffic
  • Encourage visitors to use the front door rather than the kitchen door
  • A breakfast area to take advantage of the morning sun
  • Screening from farm buildings

The client was undertaking the work himself from drawings supplied by Sean Mills + Associates.

Design Solution

Phase 1

Our plans included a new driveway across the adjacent field with visitor parking outside the garden area. A new path from the carpark would bring visitors to the front door via a new set of broader steps and a top terrace which is in proportion to the house.

Shrubs and climbers provide structure and year round colour whilst pleached hornbeam hedges screen the the garden from the farm buildings.

A breakfast patio with box hedges provides a defined area for seating at the front of the house.

Contemporary Pergola design

Phase 2

In the back garden new levels create interest with a contemporary pergola design in the far left corner attracts people to use the far end of the garden.

A water feature adds sound and visual interest to the evening entertainment area.

Phase 3

A balancing pond would enhance the middle distance view from the kitchen and new trees would break up the horizon
